Issu du groupe originel de Canterbury ( Wilde Flowers), Pye Hastings et Richard Coughlan décident de fonder Caravan et de tenter de créer une musique plus populaire. Ils vont en effet atteindre un très large public, plus étendu en tout cas que celui de Soft Machine. La musique est nettement moins jazz que dans les autres groupes de Canterbury, s'appuyant plutôt sur des chansons qu'ils développent ensuite en pièces plus importantes. Ces longs morceaux vont être leur marque de prestige, et même un point de repère pour les différents musiciens qui rejoindront la caravane (ouais, facile...). En fait, on peut facilement estimer qu'avec la disparition des longues pièces dans leurs albums, la qualité et l'interêt général des disques s'est considérablement afaiblie... Je préconiserai les 5 premiers albums (et surtout " If I could... " et " For girls who grow... "), ainsi que le double vynil " Best of Live ".

CARAVAN: CARAVAN (1969 ?, CD réédité en 1996 ?)
Romain Rioboo: Ce premier album est déjà emprunt de la " pâte " Caravan même si l'ensemble est plus varié. Il comporte deux ou trois classiques du groupe: la longue et magnifique suite " Where but Caravan would I be ?" et les magnifiques " Love song with flute " et " A place of my own " entre autres. Un son d'époque mais un album attachant car assez daté, dans le bon sens du terme.

Réunion intéressante et tout à fait réussie du Caravan des seconds et troisième albums. Quoique deux gros points noirs risquent de ternir notre plaisir: " Videos of Hollywood " et " Winterwine ". Reste que pour une fois, on a droit à deux longs morceaux, et pas n'importe lesquels !
