C'est un album étrange et superbe où le fameux guitariste d'Henri Cow nous offre sa vision des danses balkaniques ! Folklore à l'état sauvage, sons et rythmes bruts, accompagnements variés des Muffins ou d'Aqsak Maboul...album pour le moins original devenu un grand classique ! A noter au passage les excellents bonustracks et les différents participants, ce qui donne à ce CD une valeur informative non négligeable.

On reconnait dans une version aseptisée le style de Bill Laswell de " Baselines " sans les improvisations, et de " Massacre " sans le punk. Mais sans plus.

Le simple fait de voir apparaître Fred Frith et Whitney Houston sur la pochette devrait faire naître une certaine méfiance...
Car dans ces cas extrêmes, il y a forcement une des deux personnes qui n'est pas à sa place ! Et malheureusement pour nous, c'est bien Fred Frith qui se trouve on-ne-sait-comment guitariste dans un album de funk music !!! L'écart entre " Memory serves " et celui-ci est décapant: visiblement Bill Laswell a la faculté de changer de style en moins de temps qu'il ne faut pour faire un album commercial de musique funk-dance insipide... C'est bien sûr insupportable sur le coup et indigeste pendant longtemps.
Remarque: doit-on voir dans le dessin de la pochette (un billet d'un dollar) une explication symbolique du virement total de la musique de Material ?

Les rythmes imposés par la danse sont d'une extrême richesse et ont donné lieu à de superbes compositions dans le monde des musiques nouvelles. " The technology of tears " fait partie des expériences les plus troublantes: compositions très complexes, rappellant à certains moments la musique d'Art Zoyd mais dans un registre sonore plus vaste. Certains " collages " d'échantillons sont intriguants, testant ainsi notre tolérance mais l'ensemble forme une oeuvre passionante à dévorer des oreilles: un passage obligé parmi les musiques les plus aventureuses !

Superbe chef d'oeuvre, à la fois subtile et étrangement rock, il est plus accessible et plus acoustique que l'excellent " The technology of tears " qui avait démarré la série " music for dance ".

Facilement un des albums les plus fantastiques de l'année 1999 !
Un projet au départ de Chris Cutler, après Art Bears, Domestic Stories qui confronte ses textes (ici sur le thème des "sciences") aux compositions de Stevan Tickmayer. Pour l'occasion, sa musique contemporaine se fait rock, voire progressive, superbement chantée par Amy Denio et Bob Drake. Ce dernier ajoute sa touche personnelle et radicale dans le mixage et la production de cet album déjà mythique.
Une référence dans le monde des créations rock !

!! FRED FRITH: CLEARING (Tzadik, 2001)

La "suite" des solos de guitare de Fred Frith, toujours incomparables. On apprécie grandement les mêmes motivations et les mêmes idées qu'en 1974. Seule différence notable: le son. Ampli de guitare, micro, enregistrement... Tout est clean. A couper le souffle.

MASSACRE: MELTDOWN
3ème CD sorti sous le nom de Massacre, à la suite de l'époustouflant "Killing Time", rencontre explosive de Fred Frith, Bill Laswell et Fred Maher. Pour "Funny Valentine" et sous l'impulsion de John Zorn, le guitariste d'Henry Cow et le bassiste-enterprise-qui-produit-plus-vite-que-son-ombre se sont réunis, avec cette fois-ci le batteur de This Heat, Charles Hayward -excusez du peu ! Pour courronner le tout, ce CD est l'enregistrement live d'un concert donné l'année dernière au festival de Robert Wyatt...Bref, aucune promo n'est nécessaire en réalité pour que cette galette arrive près de chez vous. Sauf que nous, pauvres acheteurs, on se retrouve avec un album d'un ennui rare, où les personnages détruisent à grands coups de pas grand chose, l'aura qu'ils portaient encore il y a à peine 70 minutes...
C'est limite énervant.
