Groupe très connu du rock médiéval, il est formé de musiciens virtuoses multi-instrumentistes. Leur étonnante faculté à composer des thèmes inhabituels complexes et déroutants ( très inspirés de la musique de chambre) leur confère pourtant une étiquette " hors-norme " ou " difficile d’accès ". Tour à tour rock progressif médiéval, hard-rock ou rock théâtral, c’est à chacun de se fixer une idéé sur cette musique parfois intime. A partir de 1976, la musique n’est que simplement rock et perd un peu de son originalité de départ. Les albums les plus  caractéristiques  sont probablement " Octopus ", " Acquiring the taste " tandis que " First ", " Three riends " et " The power " se battent au rang de " meilleur album de Gentle Giant "...ce qui ne veut absolument rien dire, tant l’humeur de la musique et de l’auditeur peuvent varier selon le disque !
