Qui peut se vanter d'avoir un tel taux d'apparitions dans des disques par an ?!?
En plus, dans le style " touche à tout ", il est un maître: à part une composante funky que l'on retrouve régulièrement dans ses compositions, ce bassiste est une véritable énigme: il cotoîe les pires expérimentateurs-improviseurs (Fred Frith, John Zorn); les anciens du jazz (Pharoah Sanders) et du jazz-rock (tout Weather Report se retrouve à ses côtés !); il apprend la space-music avec Daevid Allen (New York Gong) et les techniques du son des plus grands maîtres (Eno, Peter Gabriel, Laurie Anderson) pour enfin les adapter selon l'époque à son groupe: Material.
Enfin il produit des tonnes de disques funky, dance ou de world-music sur Axiom, un de ses labels.

Bien que de type très funky (surtout dans les premiers morceaux où Fred Frith ne participe pas à la composition), la musique de Material garde un côté avant-gardiste intéressant. On reconnait dans une version aseptisée le style de Bill Laswell dans " Baselines " sans les improvisations, et de " Massacre " sans le punk. Mais sans plus.

Le simple fait de voir apparaître Fred Frith et Whitney Houston sur la pochette devrait faire naître une certaine méfiance...
Car dans ces cas extrêmes, il y a forcement une des deux personnes qui n'est pas à sa place ! Et malheureusement pour nous, c'est bien Fred Frith qui se trouve on-ne-sait-comment guitariste dans un album de funk music !!! L'écart entre " Memory serves " et celui-ci est décapant: visiblement Bill Laswell a la faculté de changer de style en moins de temps qu'il ne faut pour faire un album commercial de musique funk-dance insipide... C'est bien sûr insupportable sur le coup et indigeste pendant longtemps.
Remarque: doit-on voir dans le dessin de la pochette (un billet d'un dollar) une explication symbolique du virement total de la musique de Material ?
