Mahavishnu est en fait le pseudonyme de John McLaughlin, le renommé et excellent guitariste de Miles Davis. Avec Weather Report, ils vont créer le mouvement jazz-rock des seventies, mouvement pour lequel beaucoup sont ... " imperméables " ! En effet, il faut s'accrocher pour suivre ces excellents musiciens: tempo pressé, riffs décalquants, variations abruptes, thèmes complexes...Tout est fait pour ravir en même temps l'intellect et les jambes ! Ce style est en fait une bonne alternative à partir de 1976 face à la déconfiture du rock progressif classique, et beaucoup s'inspireront du jazz-rock et de Mahavishnu pour se fair une nouvelle jeunesse: UK, Guru Guru et le rock allemand, Brand X, Zao et certains goupe semi-zeuhles, etc...
